Houston Basketball Dedicates Guy V. Lewis Development Facility
Page and DLR Group team members joined the University of Houston to dedicate the new Guy V. Lewis Development Facility on April 3, 2016, officially celebrating the home of the Houston Men’s and Women’s Basketball programs which opened earlier this year. The timing of the ceremony could not have been more perfect, taking place during the Final Four National Championship in Houston.
The new facility was named for the Cougars’ Hall of Fame men’s basketball coach who passed away in November 2015. Lewis led the Cougars to the Final Four in 1967, 1968, 1982, 1983 and 1984.
UH President Renu Khator, Vice President for Athletics Hunter Yurachek, Men’s Head Coach Kelvin Sampson and Women’s Head Coach Ron Hughey joined members of Lewis’ family, Athletics donors, current and former Regents and student athletes from the 2015-16 Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams in a special ceremony on David Marrs Court in the facility. CBS Sports broadcasting great Jim Nantz also spoke, describing the impact Lewis had on his life as a member of the Houston Men’s Golf team and future broadcaster.
Adjacent to the existing Hofheinz Pavilion, the $25-million, 53,000 square-foot facility provides the environment that the Houston Men's and Women's Basketball student athletes require to excel throughout the season in all areas. The first level houses a dedicated practice court for each team as well as sports performance and sports medicine areas, which will be used by both programs.
The second level features the teams' areas, which include locker rooms, team rooms and academic/film theaters. The team rooms contain spacious, modern lockers, multiple video screens for television and comfortable furniture. The third level holds office space for both Men's and Women's Basketball coaching and support staffs.
Page teamed with DLR Group to design the facility; Austin Commercial was the general contractor.
