The True Meaning of Being Sustainable

Page Sustainability Director Robert Phinney shares his thoughts on the current state of sustainability.

So much has been studied on the impacts that our creations have on our physical environment and human health, but in thinking about the true meaning of being sustainable, I have begun to realize that we can do more.

Every day, our industry inherently shapes how our communities function, which in turn, changes the socio-economic and social justice characteristics of our cities, towns, campuses, neighborhoods and workplaces. We may have little direct control, but as architects, engineers, landscape architects and planners, we have tremendous influence on key decisions made by our clients.
I am inspired to think that that through awareness and thought, we can improve the greater communities. This is our profession’s next big challenge.
