Houston ISD North Forest High School
The goal of the project was to create a secure learning environment in which students are motivated through student-centered thematic education. The design process began with a two-day charrette that included administrators, teachers, students, and parents. The team agreed that the new high school should take advantage of the existing forested environment.
The design incorporates 21st-century educational principles and uses integration with the forest, through siting and views, to encourage student-centered learning. Page’s design team, which included expertise from DLR Group, met monthly with a small parent/teacher/student group monthly to share progress and gain feedback on the evolving design as well as the full Parent Teacher Organization of the existing high school.
The high school fosters thematic learning through separate topical programs and career/technical programs in each of the student learning centers. The LEED-certified campus also includes athletic practice fields.
