Houston Methodist West Hospital

Houston, TX

Project Description

Designed for flexibility and planned to accommodate future expansions, the Houston Methodist West Hospital is located on a beautifully landscaped 42-acre campus. Evidence-based design concepts, patient safety principles and energy efficient strategies were implemented throughout the hospital to promote healing and ensure patient and staff comfort and well-being. The first phase of the campus included a six-story, 474,000-square-foot hospital, a six-story, 162,000-square-foot medical office building, a 13,000-square-foot central utility plant, and multiple water features and gardens. A second phase adds another MOB and a parking garage connected via a sky bridge.

The design of the hospital employs the standard Houston Methodist H-shaped template with an atrium, but the designers made alterations to optimize views out from the front of the hospital to the landscaped gardens and the wooded areas surrounding the water feature. The six-story atrium, which is at an angle to the freeway, presents a more dynamic face to traffic traveling both east and west on I-10. This atrium serves not only as a powerful identifying element for the hospital, providing natural light to patient rooms and staff areas, but also as an exceptional wayfinding tool for people entering the building. It offers easy access to most departments and services, along with amenities such as an upscale dining facility, a chapel and conference center on the first floor. Traffic flow of patients, staff and hospital supplies and other functions are separated to provide patient privacy and an overall quiet, restful atmosphere.
