Several physical challenges, barriers posed by freeways, ramps, overpasses, and major roadways, divide South San Francisco’s downtown from the City’s major employment base and make it difficult to access the Caltrain station. To address these issues and others, the planning team initiated a robust community outreach effort to engage residents, employees, and business and property owners in a dynamic collaborative effort. The resulting specific plan and design standards achieves City and community goals by creating a vibrant, diverse place that provides connectivity to the downtown and Caltrain station areas, encourages long-term transit-supportive development, and provides accessibility for all community members. The plan is being implemented rapidly with multiple multi-family mixed use projects.
