Barbados National Reference Laboratory

Founded in 1839, Virginia Military Institute (VMI) is the nation’s oldest state-supported military college. As the student body grew and cadet training requirements evolved, the institute needed modern spaces to match its expanding programs. 

As the nation’s first world-class underground research facility for advanced particle physics, the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) will be the deepest research center in the Northern Hemisphere. Built within the former Homestake gold mine, which descends 7,400 feet below the surface, Page and Arup’s design repurposes existing mine shafts and tunnels, transforming them into leading-edge laboratories while ensuring a livable and functional environment for researchers.

Prioritizing the health and safety of military personnel and their families, the Army’s Food Analysis and Diagnostic Laboratory (FADL) at Fort Sam Houston is critical in testing food, water, and diagnostic submissions for our nation’s troops. To support this mission, Page modernized the 1960s facility, creating flexible, efficient, and functionally optimized spaces. 

Encompassing nearly 30 buildings on 36 acres of land, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Rocky Mountain Laboratories (RML) conducts research that helps safeguard the public against infectious disease threats, including possible bioterror attacks, maximum containment pathogens such as Ebola, and confounding health issues like influenza.

Page worked with NIH and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), which operates RML, to consolidate small data centers throughout the campus into one large, high-performing facility. The research building connects with NIH’s data centers nationwide, enhancing data access and supporting public health science.
