Barbados National Reference Laboratory
A joint initiative for the U.S. Department of State, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Barbados Ministry of Health, this new building allows the Barbadian government to consolidate three of its public health laboratories into one facility. The design supports the important research and testing of the Ministry and establishes one of the key medical facilities in the Caribbean.
Supporting and advancing public health, the national facility provides a platform for infectious disease control, including HIV, tuberculosis, leptospirosis, and dengue fever. The two-story, 22,000-square-foot building houses BSL-3 and BSL-2 laboratories, as well as administrative offices, training and meeting rooms, and laboratory support functions. Lab spaces include hematology, serology, molecular biology, bacteriology, chemical pathology, and quality assurance departments.
