Brown Ranch Infrastructure Strategy
Yampa Valley Housing Authority commissioned Page to perform an evaluation of energy options for Brown Ranch, a 534-acre, mixed-use workforce housing development in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Planned as a community with neighborhood housing, retail, a grocery store, fire station, and K–8 school, the development required an energy plan to analyze horizontal and vertical systems and infrastructure needed to support the community.
Page studied overall energy use and modeled multiple energy system options, including geothermal, PV, solar thermal, and solar thermal PV. Costs of each energy system option were evaluated from multiple perspectives to give a holistic picture of the short-term and long-term implications. The energy campus plan presented the solution that best met YVHA’s aspirations of the lowest total life cycle cost, lowest monthly utility costs to residents, and best opportunity for the community to achieve reduced carbon emissions and resilience goals.
