The Brain Performance Institute, part of UT Dallas’ Center for BrainHealth, redefines how we stimulate, train, and enhance the brain. Designed for patients, researchers, and the broader community, the facility blends leading-edge neuroscience with human-centered design to optimize cognitive performance.

Page’s design is rooted in science and symbolism. The frontal lobe, responsible for decision-making and problem-solving, inspired the building’s iconic elliptical form. Its façade panels echo the rhythmic pattern of an EEG strip, a visual representation of brain activity. The result is an architectural landmark that embodies innovation, fosters healing, and drives discovery.

Inside, the facility is tailored to diverse users, from athletes recovering from concussions to seniors managing memory decline. Flexible spaces balance privacy with openness, accommodating large-scale education programs and intimate therapy sessions. With a design that performs as brilliantly as the minds it serves, the Brain Performance Institute is where breakthroughs happen—one brain at a time.

A new architectural icon

The elliptical form is a feat of structural innovation. Seventy-eight slender plate steel columns, each just two inches thick yet soaring 62 feet high, create the sweeping curvature without a single curved element. With its rhythmic façade, the adjacent L-shaped building provides a quiet counterbalance, ensuring privacy while enhancing aesthetics.

Behavioral health

Architecture, nature, and movement intertwine to promote healing and focus. By blending science-backed treatment with purpose-driven design, the institute provides an environment where individuals can rebuild, reconnect, and redefine their potential.

The Brain Performance Institute was designed to foster healing in every dimension—mind, body, and community. Through thoughtful programming and spatial design, the facility serves individuals at every stage of brain health, from athletes recovering from repetitive head injuries to adolescents with ADHD and seniors managing Alzheimer’s disease.

Exterior green space and interactive zones are woven throughout the site, reinforcing the connection between brain health and physical well-being. First-floor classrooms open onto a tranquil garden designed for yoga and meditation, offering a calming space for patients and caregivers alike. On the upper levels, training rooms, collaborative workspaces, and internet cafés create a dynamic environment for learning, support, and recovery.

The Warrior Lounge is an intimate, restorative space shaped by veterans recovering from traumatic brain injuries and their families. Their input directly influenced the design, ensuring a welcoming, private refuge for camaraderie and reflection.

Design for impact

High-performance design for a sustainable future

What was once a brownfield site is now a pioneering model of environmental resilience and energy efficiency. The Brain Performance Institute’s design dramatically reduces the heat island effect, integrating bioswales to reclaim and filter stormwater runoff, ensuring sustainability starts at the ground level.

The building’s dual-volume structure balances openness and protection. Deep steel fins double as sunshades, reducing glare and heat gain while inviting soft, diffused natural light inside. The most open portion of the building maximizes daylighting while minimizing solar impact, while the L-shaped structure shields the interior from the intense western sun. A solar tracking system continuously monitors the sun’s position, adjusting automated shading devices to enhance comfort and energy efficiency.

Inside, natural, recycled, and low-VOC materials ensure exceptional indoor air quality, while the FSC-certified rift-sawn white oak ceiling reinforces the commitment to sustainable, high-performance design. By seamlessly integrating performance-driven strategies with environmental responsibility, the Brain Performance Institute proves that design can shape the future of human health.
