Architectural identity and design

Houston’s skyline redefined by healthcare excellence

Houston Methodist’s Walter Tower and Centennial Tower define the TMC skyline, reinforcing the hospital’s architectural identity. Walter Tower, standing 22 stories and nearly 1 million square feet, features a striking curvilinear form—or "boomerang." Centennial Tower, rising 29 stories, is designed to complement Walter Tower’s curvature and will stand as one of the tallest buildings in the TMC skyline.

The exterior of Walter Tower features a sophisticated glass curtainwall and metal paneling that reflect the Texas sky, while Centennial Tower's warm wood-clad canopy with an oculus provides a distinctive entry experience. Inside, interior spaces maximize openness, light, and comfort, while the curvilinear shape provides spectacular cityscape views for patients and caregivers.

Healing environments

An atmosphere of hope, from waiting areas to patient rooms

At Houston Methodist, healing extends beyond medical treatments—it’s embedded in the environment itself. Walter Tower and Centennial Tower are designed with patient and caregiver well-being in mind, featuring light-filled spaces, natural materials, and restorative views. A 14th-floor green roof in Centennial Tower provides a peaceful outdoor retreat, reinforcing the connection between nature and healing.

Waiting areas and patient floors feature a calming palette of blues and greens, reflecting the vast Texas sky and promoting a sense of serenity. Inside Walter Tower’s atrium, visitors are greeted by the “Extending Arms of Christ” mosaic mural, a powerful expression of hope and compassion. Every design decision is intentional, fostering an atmosphere that supports physical and emotional healing.

Research & innovation

Improvement of workplace environments for front-line practitioners improves outcomes

Research reveals that the physical environment can hinder or enhance the patient experience, worker efficiency, and patient safety. The intensive care environment can be physically and emotionally demanding, yet a very rewarding place to work. For Walter Tower’s critical care settings, research-informed design solutions facilitated process changes for the nurses and improved outcomes for patients and staff. Page worked with Houston Methodist to measure the outcomes by surveying front-line practitioners and validating how key design decisions achieved intended goals.

Validated outcomes from Walter Tower shaped a new benchmark for critical care design—informing the design of the Centennial Tower to scale innovation, enhance care delivery, and institutionalize proven strategies across Houston Methodist’s critical care settings.
