Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
WellStar’s first-ever pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at Kennestone Hospital is designed to strategically integrate with the existing environment while creating a bright, comfortable space for young patients and their families. The renovation transformed an existing wing into an aquatic-themed space with private patient rooms with artwork created by local elementary and middle school students.
To support their stay, parents can access a dedicated family lounge that offers refreshments, comfortable seating, computer areas, and a playroom.
Staffed 24/7 by pediatric-trained caregivers, including hospitalists, nurses, respiratory therapists, and a dedicated pharmacist, the unit is designed for efficiency and flexibility. Cross-trained staff can support both traditional pediatric med-surg and PICU patients, flowing seamlessly through cohesively designed spaces that share critical support areas, maximizing care and convenience.
Signage and graphics
Every interior finish, specialty graphic, and signage element was meticulously designed and expertly crafted to showcase Wellstar’s trademark purple and cool blue. This seamless integration strengthens brand recognition and creates an immersive, world-class healthcare experience that inspires trust and stability.

“The new PICU is adjacent to the hospital and will be served by cross-trained staff who also serve the med-surg patient cohort. The scope of work included six new PICU rooms, one of which is an isolation room. Expanded services included a dedicated child playroom, a pediatric family hospitality space, and a resident teaching area.”Charlie PratsAssociate, Senior Project ArchitectAtlanta
