To support United Airlines' growing operations, Page designed a new Tier IV, Concurrently Maintainable/Fault Tolerant data center, meeting Uptime Institute standards and client-specific requirements. Collaborating closely with United’s IT, Corporate Real Estate, and Procurement teams, we developed a resilient infrastructure to ensure seamless business continuity.

Phase 1 includes 25,000 square feet of white space—the conditioned, raised-floor area dedicated to housing IT equipment—within a 180,000-square-foot facility, housing United’s backup Emergency Operations Center (EOC). Designed for full-scale operational control in the event of a main center outage, the EOC features conference rooms, 50 workstations for key user groups, and a command center with a video wall and control room overlook for real-time supervision.

With a focus on performance, reliability, and scalability, Page’s design delivers a future-ready facility, ensuring United’s mission-critical operations remain secure and uninterrupted.

Engineering

Uptime and energy efficiency

The site is protected with K4-rated fencing, security monitoring, force protection, and EF-4 hardening. Phase 1 was designed to be a 4 MW IT load for Day One fit-up with a 12 MW total facility load at full build-out. The data center is built to Tier IV Fault Tolerant Site Infrastructure standards, ensuring reliability, redundancy, and uninterrupted operations, meeting the company’s strict performance requirements.

The electrical system was designed with 2N redundancy, meaning it has fully independent backup capacity from the power source to the servers, ensuring uninterrupted operations even in the event of a failure. The system also uses higher voltages to reduce wire and switchgear sizes, improving efficiency. To further enhance reliability, the entire building is backed up by a paralleled diesel generator plant, allowing for continuous maintenance without downtime. These features ensure the facility remains operational under any circumstances, providing the resilience needed for mission-critical operations.

The LEED Silver-certified data center was designed to achieve energy savings of approximately 50% above the required efficiency standards. This was achieved through state-of-the-art economizer systems for cooling critical electrical rooms and air handling units, energy recovery make-up air handling units for ventilation, high-efficiency condensing boilers for heating, and energy-efficient lamps for lighting.
