Stamford Health’s new hospital was designed around three key principles: embrace, care, and heal. Page created a modern, patient-centered environment that blends leading-edge technology with human touch, ensuring efficiency and comfort. Following the Planetree philosophy, the hospital prioritizes patient well-being through thoughtful design and compassionate care.

Replacing century-old campus structures, the new hospital became the largest LEED-certified healthcare project in the U.S. and the first in Connecticut. Infused with natural light, warm materials, and calming features, the design reduces stress with noise control, water and fireplace elements, gardens, and expansive views.

To enhance emergency care, the expanded 48,000-square-foot emergency department doubled capacity, cutting patient wait times in half. Every aspect of the hospital supports healing, from private rooms with family accommodations to strategically placed nurses’ stations that improve visibility and care.

Stamford Health redefines the healthcare experience by putting patients, families, and caregivers at the center of its design.

“Starting from the entrance of the hospital, the design moves people through a series of welcoming and healing experiences: a medical library providing consumer health information, a non-denominational chapel, natural light and outdoor terraces, Zen spaces for surgeons within the sterile operating zone, and even fireplaces with intimate seating for visitors.”

Enhance healing, health, and well-being

Stamford Hospital embraces the Planetree philosophy—an evidence-based, humanistic model that personalizes, humanizes, and demystifies healthcare. Recognizing the therapeutic impact of the built environment, the hospital partnered with Page to translate this philosophy into a research-informed design strategy.

Guided by user-centered and participatory planning, the team engaged clinicians, administrators, and community stakeholders to co-create a facility that balances advanced medical technology with holistic healing. The design includes indoor and outdoor yoga areas, green-roof terraces for caregiver respite, and sensory environments for therapeutic touch and sound; all supported by environmental and health design research linking nature, sensory engagement, and recovery outcomes.

This approach reflects an intentional integration of "high-tech" care with "high-touch" environments, grounded in evidence showing that patient and staff well-being are deeply influenced by spatial experience. The planning process extended to collaboration with the City of Stamford and surrounding neighborhoods, reinforcing the hospital’s role as a community-centered institution.

The resulting campus is not only a state-of-the-art medical facility but a physical embodiment of Stamford Hospital’s mission and values—merging science and soul to create a welcoming, healing environment that meets the evolving needs of patients, families, and caregivers.
