Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine
Tasked with creating a state-of-the-art, student-centered facility for a new medical school, Page’s high-performance design seamlessly integrates instruction, experiential learning, and discovery while setting the stage for the university’s future growth.
At the heart of the building is a dynamic, light-filled central spine. This “community edge” stitches together learning and social spaces, encouraging student interaction through alcoves, team rooms, and an interactive grand stair. With a warm, inviting material palette of wood and exposed concrete, the design reinforces a sense of belonging.
Purpose-built for osteopathic medicine, the building houses leading-edge teaching environments, including a 215-seat teaching theater, flexible learning spaces, an anatomy lab, and simulation and research labs. The design prioritizes adaptability, ensuring that instructional spaces evolve alongside medical advancements.
Planned for long-term growth, the 7.3-acre site supports expanded health education and a fully interprofessional campus designed to accommodate a growing workforce north of Houston. With smart planning and fast-track execution, this program is built for lasting impact.

Simulation design
Functionality meets innovation
The OMM (Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine) lab is central to the osteopathic medical approach. Designed for continued growth and advanced technology integration, the OMM provides hands-on training in diagnosing, treating, and preventing illness through musculoskeletal techniques, reinforcing the holistic philosophy of osteopathic medicine by seamlessly connecting theory with practice.
Community impact
The College of Osteopathic Medicine at Sam Houston State University isn’t just shaping future doctors—it’s transforming healthcare access in East Texas. Through advanced simulation training, students gain hands-on experience in real-world medical scenarios, preparing them to serve communities facing a critical physician shortage. With only one primary care doctor for every 4,510 residents in the region, SHSU’s commitment to residency programs and hospital collaborations will directly impact patient care.
By training physicians locally, the college increases the likelihood that graduates will stay and practice in East Texas, addressing a long-standing gap in healthcare services. The presence of academic medicine in Conroe also raises the standard of care, bringing advanced treatments to the area. Through education, innovation, and community partnerships, SHSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine is shaping a healthier, more resilient future for the region.
