U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Austin VA Outpatient Clinic
Designed “to care for those who have borne the battle,” the Austin Veterans Affairs (VA) Outpatient Clinic exemplifies the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ mission. As one of the nation's largest freestanding VA outpatient clinics, it is a flagship for the VA’s nationwide facilities, delivering essential care to those who have served.
Situated on a 35-acre site, the 275,000-square-foot clinic provides comprehensive medical services, from primary care and urgent care to diagnostic imaging, behavioral health, and pharmacy services. Patients also have access to a full spectrum of specialty services—cardiology, nephrology, neurology, oncology, endoscopy, cytology, urology, minor surgery, ENT, dental, ophthalmology, audiology, and a self-contained women’s clinic—providing a holistic approach to veteran healthcare.
Patient-centric design
Page’s design was driven by a patient-centric philosophy, shaped by insights from patients and staff. Their input helped create spaces that foster healing, dignity, and workplace pride. Interior environments prioritize patients and their loved ones, while thoughtfully designed workplaces support caregivers. Light-filled public spaces and corridors with floor-to-ceiling windows maintain a strong connection to nature—offering a sense of calm for those facing stressful situations.
Local influence
Drawing design inspiration from Central Texas
Seamlessly integrating with the natural landscape of the community it serves, the outpatient clinic’s design reflects Central Texas’s unique geology. Horizontal bands of masonry and native Lueders limestone shape the exterior and public interior spaces, echoing the layered rock formations of McKinney Falls State Park, just two miles away.
