The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in North Miami (NoMi) is poised for transformation. Envisioning the Future Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami, developed by Page, establishes a bold framework for expansion—enhancing exhibitions, education, and community engagement while preserving the museum’s iconic identity.

The plan maximizes MOCA’s ability to host diverse artists and innovative programming, ensuring year-round access to contemporary art. A dedicated education wing expands learning opportunities, integrating digital resources and flexible spaces for growing community programs. A redefined entry and civic gathering space strengthens the museum’s presence, enhancing accessibility and connection.

With North Miami’s rapid growth, expansion is strategically designed to meet evolving needs while ensuring long-term sustainability. Modernized infrastructure supports these goals, reinforcing MOCA’s role as a dynamic cultural hub. With a forward-thinking design, the museum is poised to meet the future while staying true to its mission.

MOCA NoMi Today

The museum’s 1996 building, designed by Charles Gwathmey, is a striking architectural statement that remains central to its identity. However, set back behind a large plaza with limited space, the museum must expand to enhance visibility, strengthen its presence, and better serve its mission and growing community needs.

The proposed expansion features a redesigned entry with new and renovated public spaces, ample gallery space for temporary and permanent exhibits, expanded education programs, a flexible event space and terrace, and additional administration space. A prominent gateway will stand along the 125th Street main corridor, accompanied by The Box, a multi-purpose stage that will further activate the plaza.

MOCA NoMi is set back from the street beyond a large plaza used for public events. Creating a new gateway and reinforcing the museum’s identity will dramatically enhance its presence as the cultural heart of NoMi. With a permanent Band Stage, the gateway will support plaza events as part of MOCA’s public programming.

During a time of significant city development, MOCA NoMi envisions a vibrant cultural hub. By providing a more prominent, revitalized home for the region’s creative community, MOCA NoMi can build on North Miami’s artistic legacy and extend beyond its walls—activating parks, schools, homes, and civic spaces while connecting to local and global conversations.

Visitors and the community can expect thought-provoking exhibitions highlighting underrepresented artists, amplifying diverse voices, and sharing untold stories. A redesigned entry sequence—featuring a new lobby and entry hall—will create a more visible, welcoming, and accessible entrance. This transformation will provide a dynamic gathering space that reinforces MOCA’s role as North Miami’s civic and cultural anchor.
