Birmingham VA Primary Care Annex and Parking Garage
With a focus on timely, convenient, and quality care, the new primary care annex at the Birmingham Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center provides much needed healthcare services to Alabama’s veterans. The annex allowed the VA to relocate services from an existing medical center a few blocks away, better supporting its patients with pharmacy, radiology, audiology, physical therapy, and general ambulatory care. The new annex also offers outpatient procedures, women’s health, mental health, and several lab functions.
The 69,000-square-foot clinic is connected to a new eight-story parking garage through a covered walkway and a landscaped healing garden visible from the lobby. An oasis from the hustle and bustle of city streets and noise, the courtyard offers therapeutic respite for patients. Strategic use of sunlight and shading allows the courtyard to also function as a visual cue for pedestrian circulation, guiding visitors to the entrance.
Occupying an entire city block in the Birmingham Health District, the annex includes a new 752,000-square-foot, 2,335-space parking garage. It’s the second largest parking garage in Alabama, and its location adjacent to the clinic provides patients with easier access to care. Previously, patients used a city parking deck and bused several blocks to the hospital.
