Integrated Science Complex (ISC) III
Chartered in 1693, The College of William & Mary, the second-oldest college in the United States, remains a top-ranked public research university. While rooted in tradition, the historic campus continues to evolve, embracing ambitious advancements in research and education.
The third phase of the Integrated Science Center (ISC 3) marked a major step toward an interconnected, cross-disciplinary research hub, linking Applied Science, Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, and Interdisciplinary Research. Featuring reconfigurable labs and energy-efficient design, ISC 3 also houses William & Mary’s High-Performance Computing team.
With space for students to collaborate and collide, a “badly needed” 113,000-square-foot addition—described by past president Taylor Reveley—strengthened William & Mary’s commitment to integrated, interdisciplinary science research.
This transformation extends across the university. In Fall 2023, William & Mary launched the Future of Arts & Sciences initiative and announced a new school encompassing Computer Science, Data Science, Applied Science, and Physics (ISC 4)—ensuring its legacy of innovation and excellence endures for generations to come.
Building program
Built with adaptability in mind, the Integrated Science Center (ISC 3) is designed to support evolving research needs. A flexible laboratory module system enables quick reconfiguration, while robust infrastructure accommodates diverse scientific pursuits. Optimized vibration control and fume hood criteria equip the Department of Applied Science and other disciplines with leading-edge tools for advanced research. Designed for longevity, the labs can readily adjust to new grant funding opportunities and emerging scientific advancements, ensuring William & Mary remains at the forefront of innovation.
By bringing multiple disciplines under one roof, ISC 3 fosters collaboration, accelerates discoveries, and enhances the quality of research. The building’s defining feature is its emphasis on integration. As Eric Bradley noted at the ISC 3 dedication, “This is truly a beautiful building, but it’s more than that. It’s very specifically designed for interdisciplinary research, as well as the traditional programmed research.”
Intentional design elements encourage interaction, from semi-private meeting rooms to open gathering spaces. “This allows people from different disciplines to get together to share their expertise on a common question or problem,” Bradley added. ISC 3 exemplifies The College’s commitment to interdisciplinary science, teaching, and research.
Science on display
A transparent approach to discovery and collaboration
Glass-walled teaching labs line the main thoroughfare, offering a front-row view into the scientific process. By showcasing active research, the design encourages curiosity, fosters interdisciplinary connections, and strengthens the sense of community among students, faculty, and researchers. Open, shared spaces further promote interaction, breaking down barriers between disciplines.
