Blending tradition with innovation, Texas Tech University’s Academic Sciences Building pairs a timeless Spanish Renaissance exterior with a modern, technically advanced interior. Designed to fuel discovery, it’s thoughtfully divided into two zones—one dedicated to state-of-the-art learning spaces and the other to secure-access core biomedical research labs—seamlessly integrated into one striking, high-performance facility.

Home to five academic departments—Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Geosciences, Physics and Astronomy, and Psychological Sciences—the building features flexible classrooms that support various teaching pedagogies, along with informal learning and collaboration spaces.

Impressive in its utility, the dynamic public spaces prioritize visual connectivity between laboratories, circulation promenades, gathering spaces, and outdoor courtyards, fostering spontaneous interactions, innovation, and scientific exploration.

The secure biomedical research zone includes an ISO 6 cleanroom with ISO 5 capabilities, a human sampling lab, a BSL2 lab, and a BSL3 laboratory—specialized spaces rarely integrated into academic settings.

Blending tradition with innovation

Texas Tech’s Academic Sciences Building features a modern, contextually sensitive design, blending precast concrete, metal panels, and glass. Crisp geometric forms, textured surfaces, and strategic shading enhance energy efficiency and natural light. The design nods to campus heritage while delivering a striking, functional facade suited for West Texas’ environment.

Sitting at the heart of Texas Tech’s campus, the new Academic Sciences Building was designed to seamlessly weave into the university’s historic architectural character while meeting the demands of 21st-century science education and research.  Traditional Spanish Renaissance arches, ornate details, and a warm material palette—including Mission Blend brick, cast stone accents, and terracotta roof tiles—allow the facility to blend effortlessly into its surroundings.

High-tech science buildings require massive rooftop infrastructure—ventilation systems, exhaust stacks, and more. Rather than disrupt the campus’s historic aesthetic, the design team crafted a creatively hidden, sunken roof with a thoughtfully tapered profile. From the ground, the building maintains its traditional Spanish Renaissance charm, while beneath the surface, state-of-the-art systems keep labs running safely and efficiently.

Student experience

Where learning meets discovery

From active learning classrooms with advanced IT and AV capabilities to dynamic collaboration zones with flexible seating and writable surfaces, the Academic Sciences Building fosters real-time interdisciplinary learning. Nearly 20% of the building is dedicated to shared spaces, designed to spark spontaneous collaboration and idea exchange across disciplines.

A prominent, exposed stairwell serves as the building’s connective tissue, linking floors and departments while encouraging movement and conversation. Adjacent to these communal areas, teaching laboratories house specialized instruments tailored to diverse curricula, ensuring hands-on learning opportunities.

Beyond the classroom, outdoor spaces extend the learning environment. The IGOR telescope from the White Sands Missile Range—a historically significant instrument that once tracked missiles for the military—now serves as a focal point for research and discovery, while the geology courtyard doubles as an outdoor classroom. These elements enrich the student experience, merging science, history, and collaboration in a setting designed to inspire.
